Why hairdressing? What made you choose this as a profession?
Basically, when I was thirteen, one of my good friends from school’s brother was a hairdresser and he was on a program which got me inspired. So then I just began to play with my friends hair and found I had a natural ability with hair and that is what really pushed me into it, really.
When you look at your career – where it’s gone and where it is now – what would you say was your defining moment as a stylist?
When I started my apprenticeship, I saw everyone was working toward London Fashion Week or the Fellowship and that is where it really captivated me. This is where I have been focusing my career — bringing me to just over 10 years in the industry — I started with Karine Jackson in July of 2014; after qualifying in Feb of 2014.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF ACTUALLY BEING A STYLIST— PERSON, HAIRSTYLE, OR EVEN SHOOT— WHICH HAS BEEN A STAND OUT?
Funnily enough, it was actually a Curlformers® show at Pro Hair Live in 2018 where I did this voluminous Afro look that got captured and showcased in Professional Hair Magazine. So, it wasn’t just that my work was being displayed on a large, highly influential stage but that it was physically chosen and then published that made this moment truly memorable.
HAIRFLAIR ARE ABOUT STYLING AND CURLING ANY AND ALL HAIR TYPES WITH KINDNESS — HAVING WORKED WITH CURLFORMERS® AND NOW WAVEFORMERS®; WHICH WIDTH WOULD YOU SAY GIVES YOU THE MOST CREATIVE FREEDOM?
I wouldn’t actually choose because as a stylist why would you pinpoint just one specific curl type; when all of them as a collective would give you the most creative freedom possible?
HAVING AVIDLY WORKED WITH CURLS WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES CURLS SUCH AN ENHANCING CHARACTERISTIC ON A PERSON — IDEALLY, WHAT MAKES A CURL SO SPECIAL?
Because of their versatility. Curls are just the most versatile element to hair. They are shapeshifters who take on many different forms.
A curl boss is someone known to embrace curly hair. They can be someone who is an inspiration with their own curly hair or rock a curly look — a ‘curlspiration’ if you will — wearing it with pride whilst taking the world over by storm or it is someone who is an expert in all things curl; understanding textures, movement and personal preferences and how to cut, style and treat — a curl boss is able to transform them with skill and precision. If you could give one curl boss quote, what would it be?
Curly hair happens to be my specialty so coming up with a quote was something that required more thought. I guess I would have to say that “It’s more than just hair, it’s an attitude.”
LOOKING BACK, WHAT WOULD BE THE ONE THING THAT YOU WOULD PASS ON TO AN ASPIRING HAIRDRESSER?
There is no wrong or right; you, yourself can define your own aesthetic and style. It’s not a written exam or a textbook; there are no guidelines. You have your own freedom to go wherever you want and let your passion shine through in place of your confidence.
