Corkscrew Mania

How the world fell back in love with curls

Once the staple style of a generation, corkscrew hairstyles are having a new moment, revived by the likes of Gucci’s creative genius Alessandro Michele and Celine’s Hedi Slimline, as well as by A-listers Bella and Gigi Hadid, Daisy Ridley and Blake Lively. If poker straight was the style du jour of the nineties (we’re looking at you J’Lo and Gwyneth Paltrow), then we’re betting it’s the natural curl that’ll be remembered from the post-noughties era.

Social media has been a big part of this, providing a platform for a cultural movement to take place – namely that of natural hair influencers choosing to speak out and leave their straightened, relaxed hair habits behind in search of a different way. You only need to search for hashtags like #naturalcurls #naturalcurlyhair and #curlslikeus to see the wave (pun intended) of girls embracing what they were blessed with.

One huge believer in the shift to natural is Rochelle Humes, who openly documented her transition from years of GHD straightened and relaxing treatments to going back to her natural, tightly coiled curls. It was only when her daughter asked how she could get straight hair like a Disney princess that she realised enough was enough and the journey began.

Now, we see curls everywhere. Netflix show Russian Doll broke free from normative narrative structures and was praised for this, but many of us also spent the 8 episodes lusting after Nadia’s (Natasha Lyonne’s) beautifully wavy mop of red locks. And we have to give a special shout out to Rihanna’s 70’s Diana Ross inspired Grammy’s look from 2018. This shift from slick, pin-straight hair to textured tresses is a welcomed respite for those of us who have spent years and $ trying to keep our curls at bay, battling with our straightening irons and resisting what nature gave us. Now it seems, we’re willing to be kinder to our strands and give them a vacation from heated styling and expensive treatments.

All of this has probably got you thinking you want to rock this look, and we don’t blame you. This gorgeous style is guaranteed to earn you plenty of attention, whether you’re working the look in the office or on the dancefloor (you’ll always remember the girl with the distinctive curly hair). Super-hot corkscrew curls are bold and beautiful, and what’s more, this type of curl can also create the illusion of thicker locks, so those looking to give themselves a helping hand should also bear this in mind.

But how to get them? If you’re lucky enough to have naturally curly hair, you may still want a helping hand to get your mane looking its absolute best. Or you may have dead straight hair and think this style is totally impossible for you. Well, you’re both in luck because Curlformers are the worlds only patented, heat-free, salon-quality hair curlers, working on all hair types to give you the gorgeous curls you deserve.

To create the corkscrew coil of now, get your hands on one of our Corkscrew Curl Styling Kits and follow the step by step below. Be sure to tag us in any snaps with the hashtag #myhairmyflair.
